Green Valley Squares

The Green Valley Squares is a very active square dance club offering many opportunities to those interested in enjoying themselves dancing, and also to those interested in preserving an original American folk dance tradition. Although the dancing itself has changed somewhat through the years and has become more organized through the efforts of national and international associations, at root it is an extension of the quadrille and contra dance traditions.

GVR sponsors a class in Modern Square Dancing taught by nationally-known caller Rick Gittelman. His classes start each November and January. Since Rick travels to Green Valley to give the class, our dance club schedules reviews for its members on the same days, enabling the more experienced dancers to brush up on their moves, as well as to assist the teacher by filling squares if there are not an even number of beginning or intermediate dancers. Those who assist the new students are called "Angels."

The lessons and reviews this year are at Las Campanas, starting at 11:00 in the morning and running until 4:45 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays. Although the class is filled for this season, if you are interested you are welcome to come in and watch, and talk to the instructor or dancers about future dancing opportunities. Every Monday night there is a club-sponsored dance at Canoa Hills Recreation Center at which the dancers wear traditional dress and dance the most complicated patterns, and you are invited to drop in there to watch.
